Disney has announced the exciting news that a filmed performance of the hit musical Hamilton, featuring the original Broadway cast, will be released in cinemas on October 15, 2021. The Tony- and Pulitzer-winning musical, composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, recounts the inspiring tale of the illustrious Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his rise to power with a blend of hip-hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes.
In a statement, Miranda expressed his love for musical storytelling, particularly the Disney collaborations of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, which inspired him growing up. He also said pride in the film adaptation of musical, which director Tommy Kail captured during a live performance of Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June 2016.
Kail expressed excitement about the film’s ability to give audiences the same seat in the theater, enabling them to experience the live performance as if they were there. He is thrilled for fans and new audiences worldwide to witness the magic of the original Broadway cast in this filmed version of Hamilton.
The cast includes Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Jonathan Groff as King George, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton.
In addition, the cast features Carleigh Bettiol, Ariana DeBose, Hope Easterbrook, Sydney James Harcourt, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Elizabeth Judd, Jon Rua, Austin Smith, Seth Stewart, and Ephraim Sykes.
The release of the Hamilton film will follow the premiere of the film adaptation of Miranda’s first Tony-winning musical, In the Heights, which is set to be released in the spring of 2021. Disney’s release of the Hamilton film is sure to be a must-see event for theater fans and new audiences alike.
